Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich (on a stick)

Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich (on a stick)

Sometimes the simplest meals are the ones we never outgrow. A classic grilled ham and cheese sandwich has been my go-to comfort food since childhood—gooey cheddar, salty ham, and golden buttery bread pressed until crisp. And while it’s perfect straight out of the pan for a quick lunch, this recipe takes it one step further by turning it into the ultimate party-ready finger food.

If finger food is your thing, you should also try my honey garlic little smokies, garlic butter roasted mushrooms, or these buffalo chicken meatballs. But today’s spotlight belongs to these stacked, bite-sized grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Served on a stick with a creamy ketchup-mayo dipping sauce, they’re just as fun for game day gatherings as they are for after-school snacks.

Ingredient Overview

Here’s what makes these sandwiches shine:

  • White bread (or bread of choice) – thick-cut works best for sturdiness.

  • Cheddar cheese – melty, sharp, and classic.

  • Deli ham – smoky, savory slices stacked high.

  • Butter – for that golden, crispy crust.

  • Ketchup + mayonnaise – a simple, creamy dipping sauce.

Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t skimp on cheese: Double layers ensure maximum melt.

  • Press lightly: Use a spatula to gently press down while grilling for even browning.

  • Keep warm for parties: Hold finished sandwiches in a 200°F oven until ready to serve.

  • Switch up the cheese: Swiss, provolone, or pepper jack work great for flavor twists.

Storage & Reheating

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

  • Reheat: Warm in a skillet over medium-low heat or in an air fryer for crispness.

Can I make these sandwiches ahead of time?

Yes—assemble the sandwiches in advance, refrigerate, and grill just before serving.

Can I bake them instead of frying?

Absolutely. Bake at 400°F for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway, for an oven-baked version.

What’s the best bread to use?

Any sturdy bread works—try sourdough for a heartier bite or brioche for extra richness.
