Have you tried a Bratwurst Dog?  Well you need too.  These are the quintessential Summer delight, plump and juicy and top with one of the most loved chips in the land, Doritos.

Ah.. Summer.  The moments we get to enjoy warm nights, clear skies, and screaming kids.. oh wait, did I say that out loud?  Summer means it grill time and these Bratwurst Dogs are going to be a delicious treat hot off your BBQ.

These Brats are loaded up with simple easy to find ingredients that will be magic in your mouth.  In honor of my Dad for Father’s Day, these Brats are for you!  He is a “real food” kind of guy.  Meaning, real food is all about burgers, brats, and all the fixings.

So today these Bratwurst Dogs are full of sauerkraut, homemade BBQ sauce, jalapeños, and Doritos.

How do you cook Brats on the grill?

To cook Brats on the grill you want to heat your grill to 400 degrees.  Make sure to spray the grill with non stick grilling spray.  Place the Brats on the heated grill and make sure to turn frequently to evenly cook all sides.

How long does it take to cook Brats on the grill?

Cooking your brats on the grill at 400 degrees will take about 10 minutes.  Make sure to keep an eye on them and turn often so the cook evenly.  If you want to lower your heat and cook them slower, It will take about 20 minutes to cook them.

What is the difference between a hot dog and brat?

A hot dog is derived from North American whereas a brat is a type of German sausage that is usually made up of fresher meat.  They are both made up of different spices which gives them their unique flavors.

The flavor from the brats and the homemade BBQ sauce really make these Bratwursts Dogs delicious.  The BBQ sauce has a sweet and spicy flavor that kicks the heat up on these brats just a bit.

How do you make homemade BBQ sauce?

This is very easy and only takes a few minutes to make.  I highly recommend making it, it is delicious.

In a small saucepan combine:

  1. 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  2. 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  3. 1-1/2 tbsp honey
  4. 1 tsp chipotle cili pepper
  5. 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  6. 1 tsp minced garlic

Cook over medium heat, stirring often until it comes to a slow boil.  Remove from heat and let simmer until your are ready to use.

So along with Summer think of your Dad, your husband, or a friend who really needs a little extra something special, and grill up these Bratwurst Dogs.  Lay out a bunch of different types of chips for them to top their brats watch the smiles on their faces.  They will be saying “thank you” for the “real food!”

Bratwurst Dogs

Have you tried a Bratwurst Dog?  Well you need too.  These are the quintessential Summer delight, plump and juicy and top with one of the most loved chips in the land, Doritos.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 14oz package stadium bratwursts
  • 1 13oz package hot dog buns
  • 2 jalapeños, finely chopped
  • 1 small bag of Doritos (or favorite chip) roughly crushed
  • 1 16oz jar of fresh sauerkraut

For the BBQ sauce:

  • 1 cup bbq sauce ( I used Sweet Baby rays)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp chipotle chili pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp minced garlic

Directions:

  1. Heat grill to 400 degrees and spray with non stick grill spray
  2. Grill brats for 10 minutes, rotating often to cook evenly. Remove from grill and set aside.
  3. While grill is still hot, spread hot dog buns face side down on grill and cook 2-3 minutes until toasted.
  4. In a small saucepan add all the ingredients for the BBQ sauce.  Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let simmer until ready to use.
  5. Assemble brats by adding 1 tbsp of bbq sauce, 1 tbsp of sauerkraut, to the bun.  Then place the bratwursts down and top with diced jalapeños and crushed Doritos.  Top with more BBQ sauce and enjoy.
