How do you make homemade onion rings?

  2. Cut up onions into thick slices, keeping a couple of the onion layers together and peel off the skin. Place on a large plate.
  3. Layer a large baking sheet with paper towels and set aside
  4. In a deep sauce pan (to avoid oil splatter) or in a deep fryer, add peanut oil and heat to medium high/365 degrees.
  5. Dredge your onions into the prepared batter then place into the deep fryer.  Do so in batches of 2 to 3 onion rings.  Fry for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Place fried onion rings on prepared baking sheet to absorb excess oil, and repeat until all onions have been fried.  Serve warm with favorite dipping sauce.

Yes, the process is slightly different.

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.  Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Slice onions into thick slices and set aside.
  3. Working with three different bowls, add flour and baking powder in one bowl.  Three beaten eggs in another bowl, and breadcrumbs, garlic salt, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and black pepper in the third bowl.
  4. Working with one onion ring at a time, run it under cold water then dredge into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then place in the egg wash, allowing excess to drip off, then place into third bowl, the breadcrumb mixture.  Place onions onto the baking sheet.  Repeat until all the onion rings are coated and bake 10 minutes, then flip the baking sheet around and bake another 10 minutes.  Serve with favorite dipping sauce.

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup Pale Ale Beer
  • 1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 large white, yellow or sweet onions sliced thick
  • 2 1/2 cups Peanut oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Whisk flour and beer together in a large bowl until smooth.
  2. Add in Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and black pepper.  Cover and let sit 30 minutes.
  3. Place paper towels on a baking sheet and set aside.
  4. In a deep sauce pan (to avoid oil spitting out) or deep fryer add peanut oil.  Heat over medium high heat or to 365 degrees.
  5. Dredge sliced onion rings into prepared batter and place into hot oil, working in batches of 2 to 3 rings.  Fry for 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
  6. Place onion rings on prepared baking sheet to absorb residual oil.  Serve warm with favorite dipping sauce.
