Beef Shish Kabobs
Shish Kabobs are such a great family friendly food and can be made in so many different combinations, but I know you will love these Beef Shish Kabobs with fresh peppers, onions, and baby potatoes. The key is to grill them at 450 degrees, nice and hot to get juicy medium rare pieces of steak.
This will also cook the peppers just right, they won’t be too soft, but will retain a slight crispness to them. And don’t worry, your potatoes will not be rock hard.
The trick to getting perfect grilled potatoes is to microwave them briefly to soften them. So when it’s time to grill they will come out crisp on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside.
What is the Shish in Shish Kabob?
The shish is referring to a skewer that has been threaded with pieces of vegetables and meat and is grilled.
This is meat, potato, and veggie combination is sensational. If you are not one of those people who feels putting steak sauce on a grilled steak should be against the law, then add your favorite sauce and let the flavors melt in your mouth.
But, on the other hand, if you are on the food police, like my husband, and enjoy the natural flavors of your grilled Beef Shish Kabobs you won’t be disappointed.
What kind of beef do you use for shish kabobs?
There are a few different cuts of beef you can use for shish kabobs, but really it all comes down to personal preference and price.
- Filet Mignon, is an amazingly tender cut of beef with great flavor, but is by far the most expensive.
- Tenderloin, which is also where the filet comes from is another cut of meat that is very tender and doesn’t require marinating or much seasoning to taste delicious, but again it is on the higher price tag.
- Boneless Top Sirloin is a much more economic option and is commonly used for shish kabobs. I asked my local butcher what they use and he also stated they use Top Sirloin.
So really the cut of meat is not an issue, it is more of how much you want to spend and what you like eating. For this Beef Shish Kabob recipe I did use the boneless Top Sirloin and everyone loved it.
Again, grilling them quickly over direct high heat, uncovered helps to keep the beef from getting tough and will cook the beef to a nice tender medium rare.
How do you make Shish Kabobs?
- On a large cutting board cut meat, peppers, and onions into 1 inch pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
- Cut baby potatoes in half and place in a microwave safe bowl or plate, add 2 tbsp of water and cover. Cook in the microwave on high for 4 minutes to soften. Let cool then add to bowl with meat and veggies.
- Season with garlic salt, red pepper flakes, steak seasoning, onion powder, light brown sugar, avocado oil, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix to coat well.
- Using 6 metal skewers thread a piece of meat, followed by red pepper, red onion, green pepper and potato. Repeat ending with a piece of meat. Repeat with remaining skewers.
- Heat grill to 45o degrees and spray with non stick grilling spray. Grill uncovered 5 minutes, flip and grill for 5 more minutes. Remove shish kabobs from grill and let rest 2-3 minutes. Add steak sauce (optional) and enjoy.

Beef Shish Kabobs

Ingredients:
- 1-1.5lb boneless top sirloin, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1-80z bag baby white or gold potatoes, halved
- 1 red pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 green pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 red onion, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp steak seasoning
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp light brown sugar
- 2 tbsp avocado oil
- steak sauce (optional)
- 6 metal skewers (you can use wood, make sure to soak them for 20 minutes before adding the meat/veggies).
Directions:
- Heat grill to 450 degrees and spray with non-stick grilling spray.
- Cut potatoes in half and place in a microwave safe dish. Add 2 tbsp of water and cover. Cook on high for 4 minutes, let cool before threading on skewer.
- Place cut meat, cooled potatoes, and vegetables into a large mixing bowl and season with garlic salt, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, steak seasoning, onion powder, brown sugar, and avocado oil. Mix well to coat.
- Thread the skewers starting with a piece of meat, followed by red pepper, red onion, green pepper, and potato. Repeat once more then set aside. Thread remaining skewers then grill uncovered for 5 minutes. Flip and grill 5 more minutes or until desired doneness. This will get your steak to medium rare so go longer by 2 minutes a side if you want them cooked more.
- Let skewers rest about 3 minutes then remove meat and veggies and enjoy.
- Optional: baste with steak sauce and enjoy.
