I have a family so that means they need to eat, and being a busy working mom the last thing I want to think about is standing in the kitchen all night making dinner, so that is where this easy slow cooker shepherd’s pie recipe makes life simple and delicious.
I made mine with ground beef, but it is also made with lamb, however if you don’t eat red meat and want to switch the shepherd’s pie ingredients to ground chicken or turkey that is completely up to you. It won’t be as traditional, but it will still be delicious.
What is Shepherd’s Pie?
Shepherd’s pie ingredients contain minced red meat. It is referred to “cottage pie” if you are using beef, and “shepherd’s pie” if you are using lamb. Shepherd’s pie comes in different variations, but can have vegetables such as peas and carrots in it. Before it is baked there is a layer of mashed potatoes placed on top, which forms a delicious crust once cooked.
What is in shepherd’s pie?
This slow cooker shepherd’s pie contains ground beef, chopped onions, garlic, diced tomatoes, and peas and carrots. Very simple but hearty. It is seasoned with garlic salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and topped with prepared mashed potatoes and a rich beef gravy.
What spices do you put in shepherd’s pie?
For the meat filling:
- 2 pounds ground beef or lamb
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 14 ounce can diced tomatoes, drained
- 2 teaspoons garlic salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 12 ounces frozen peas and carrots
How do I make Shepherd’s pie?
- Spray the inside of 6qt slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a large skillet brown ground beef over medium high heat, drain any fat.
- Add in diced onions, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, diced tomatoes, garlic salt, black pepper and frozen peas and carrots. Mix until combined.
- Pour meat mixture into slow cooker. Top with prepared mashed potatoes, cover and cook on high for 3 hours. 20 minutes before done cooking remove lid and top with beef gravy, cover and finish cooking.
- Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.

Can you freeze shepherd’s pie?
Yes. Whatever you have left over allow to cool to room temperature. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze. You can also reheat the shepherd’s pie. Allow to unthaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Place in an oven safe baking dish covered, and reheat for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
