Philly Cheese Steak Meatballs
Oh the Philly Cheese Steak! Originated in Philadelphia in the early 20th Century, served hot on a hoagie roll, this famous Philly cheese sandwich has been making mouths water from the beginning. This is a compressed version of the Philly Cheese Steak in a creamy and sensational cheese sauce which will have your mouth water from bite to bite. These Philly Cheese Steak Meatballs are great served as an appetizer or as a main course. They can hold there own due to the cheese sauce. It is a heavier cheese sauce that you could mix over pasta and add the meatballs or serve on their own with sliced warm sourdough bread to soak up every ounce of cheese.
How should you cook meatballs?
- You can cook meatballs several ways; in the oven, in a skillet/pan on the stove, in a crockpot or instant pot, you can even deep fry them, and I am sure you can cook them on a grill (although I have never tried it).
- The more traditional ways are on the stove, in the oven, or in a crockpot. For this Philly Cheese Steak Meatball recipe I cooked them in a skillet over the stove, but you could use the oven and then add the meatballs to the cheese sauce.
How do you cook meatballs in a pan?
- Heat a pan or skillet over medium high heat and add 2 tbsp of olive oil. Let the olive oil heat up for about 1 minute.
- Add the meatballs and cook for 8 minutes, rotating so all sides get nice and brown.
- Remove the meatballs from the skillet and then make the cheese sauce.
How do you cook meatballs in the oven?
If you prefer to cook the meatballs in the oven you can follow these simple directions.
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
- Spray a rimmed baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and place the meatballs on the baking sheet.
- Bake uncovered for 18-20 minutes until meatballs are cooked through.
- While meatballs are baking make cheese sauce in a skillet/pan and add the meatballs to the sauce once they are done baking.
How do you make Philly Cheese Steak Sauce?
- In a skillet or pan melt 2 tbsp of butter over medium-low heat and add in 1 tbsp of flour, this creates a roux to thicken the sauce, and mix until smooth, about 1 minute.
- Pour in 3/4 cup whole milk and stir to combine.
- Add in 6 ounces of Velveeta cheese, cut into cubes and 1 cup grated gruyere cheese. Stir until cheese has melted. Add in meatballs and spoon sauce over the top.

- In a large bowl add, ground beef, diced green and red peppers, finely chopped onion, mushrooms and garlic, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, whole milk, grated gruyere cheese and an egg. Mix all the ingredients together and form into balls.
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and add 2 tbsp of olive oil. Let the oil heat up for about one minute then add the meatballs. Cook for 8 minutes, rotating often to get all sides evenly browned. Remove meatballs from skillet and prepare cheese sauce.
