What are mozzarella sticks?
- Mozzarella sticks are elongated pieces of mozzarella cheese (cheese sticks) that can be breaded or dipped into a batter and fried.
- They are often served with a dipping sauce such as; marinara sauce, cheese sauce, ranch or thousand island dressing, honey mustard, or ketchup.
Who invented mozzarella sticks?
- It has been said that mozzarella sticks were invented in Paris, France, however the original recipe didn’t call for mozzarella cheese it used Muenster cheese.
Mozzarella Sticks always make a great appetizer and putting out different dipping sauces for people to try makes them fun to dip and enjoy.
How do you make Mozzarella Sticks at home?
- Spread out 3 separate bowls. In the first bowl you will need flour. The second bowl will be an egg and milk mixture, and the third bowl will have Panko crumbs along with different herbs and seasonings. Begin with the first bowl and coat mozzarella sticks (one at a time) with flour, shaking off excess. Dredge the mozzarella sticks through the egg mixture, and then through the Panko mixture. Repeat all three steps again to get a good coating.
- Place the mozzarella stick on a rimmed baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour.
- In a large skillet heat peanut oil (but don’t let it boil) and add frozen mozzarella sticks a few at a time. Fry until golden brown (this process will happen very quickly) only about 10-20 seconds depending on how hot your oil is.
- Place on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm with marinara sauce or dipping sauce(s) of choice.
Why do you have to freeze the mozzarella sticks?
- By freezing the mozzarella sticks after breading them you prevent the cheese from oozing out and breaking through the breaded coating.
- Because you need to freeze the mozzarella sticks, this allows you to make them ahead of time and pull them out of the freezer when you are ready to fry and eat.
