Tis the Season to be drinking Hot Buttered Rum and loving every minute of it. I love the Holidays and we often forget about all the yummy drinks that go along with all FaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaaa’s. Hot Buttered Rum Batter is one of my favorite Holiday treats. I say “treat” because really you will be drinking warm cinnamon and sugar ice cream topped with whipped cream and rimmed with brown sugar.
Hot Buttered Rum Batter last a lifetime too, well ok, maybe not a lifetime but it can last for up to 3 months in your freezer. So when you are thinking you want something sweet and that will warm the soul you can pull out your Hot Buttered Rum and mix up this creamy deliciousness and enjoy. You can keep this spirit friendly or add a little of your favorite Rum to mix up a little hot tottie.
How do you make Hot Buttered Rum?
- Place butter, powdered sugar, brown sugar, ice cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
- Mix until combined and place in a air tight container.
- Place container in the freezer and let batter freeze ( about 2 hours).
- Place 2 Tablespoons of hot buttered rum batter into a mug and pour boiling water into mug. Mix well and top with whipping cream and cinnamon.
- * To make this a Hot Toddy, just place the hot buttered rum batter in a mug or glass, add your favorite rum and then hot water. Stir well and top with whipping cream or heavy cream.
Tips for making Hot Buttered Rum Batter:
- Make sure to put in the freezer after making. It doesn’t get too hard, it is more like the consistency of ice cream to it will scoop out easily, but you do want it firm.
- Can you add Rum to the batter? Yes, but do it in individual glasses, don’t actually add it to the hot buttered rum batter just in case kids or those who don’t drink alcohol can enjoy too.
- How long can hot buttered rum batter stay in the freezer? It will last up to 3 months and still taste amazing.
- Hot Buttered Rum is great to serve as a dessert with some ginger molasses cookies or biscotti.

Hot Buttered Rum Batter is a sweet and creamy drink that tastes just like dessert in a cup.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound of butter (4 cubes) softened
- 1 pound of powdered sugar (16oz)
- 1 pound of brown sugar (16oz)
- 1 quart of vanilla ice cream
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
Topping/sugar rimmed glasses:
- Whipped cream
- 1 Tablespoon melted butter
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons white sugar
- Cinnamon sticks
Directions:
- Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Transfer to an airtight container and place in the freezer for at least 2 hours.
- Add 2 Tablespoons batter to a glass mug and cover with boiling water.
- Mix well and top with whipping cream, cinnamon and cinnamon stick.
Sugar Rim (optional):
- Mix the brown sugar and white sugar on a plate.
- Melt butter in microwave safe bowl and dip top of glass mug into butter.
- Dip butter rimmed mug into sugar mixture and roll around to fully cover.
